Why Sri Lanka?

The following quote is published with the permission of Simon from Australia, who together with his fiance Rachelle from UK, chose to have their wedding in Sri Lanka on the very special day of 11.11.11.

"Rachelle and I chose Sri Lanka for our wedding after falling in love with the country during our first visit in January 2010.
Our first impressions of Sri Lanka? Warm, smiley and welcoming. Our final impressions? Safe, stimulating and impossible to forget.

Friendly and intriguing, Sri Lanka works its way under your skin and won’t let go. Nestling beneath the subcontinent in the dazzlingly aquamarine Indian Ocean, this lush and ancient island boasts a tropical climate, beautiful white sand beaches, wonderful wildlife and a criminally underrated cuisine.

We returned to marry in Galle Fort on November 11, 2011, an unforgettable date for an unforgettable event.

We love Sri Lanka so much, and are already planning our next visit. Who knows, one day we may even move to Sri Lanka ourselves."

Sri Lanka offers world class luxury resorts, empty beaches, epic surfing, elephant orphanages, tea plantations and stunning ruins: little wonder travellers since Marco Polo have waxed lyrically about its kaleidoscopic attractions.

Colombo Airport is efficient and easy, the road modern and safe, the countryside clean and green.
Our first impressions of Sri Lanka? Warm, smiley and welcoming. Our final impressions? Safe, stimulating and impossible to forget.

Predominantly Buddhist, friendly and intriguing, Sri Lanka works its way under your skin and won’t let go. Nestling beneath the subcontinent in the dazzlingly aquamarine Indian Ocean, this lush and ancient island boasts a tropical climate, beautiful white sand beaches, wonderful wildlife and a criminally underrated cuisine: just wait till you try the rice & curry!

HISTORY & POLITICS
Sri Lanka is bouncing back after a turbulent recent past. The long civil war with the Tamil Tigers in the north ended (in controversial circumstances) in May 2009, and the island’s coast has fully recovered from the worst effects of 2004’s Indian Ocean tsunami.

This Asian pearl has a rich and colourful history. The fabled land of Serendip attracted Arab traders as early as the seventh century - the Arabic word Serendib means ‘Island of Jewels’. Today, Galle Fort’s mosques show the influence of these first overseas adventurers.

The Portuguese arrived in 1505 and monopolised the valuable spice trade for a century before the Dutch took over in 1602. Eventually in 1818 the British established a unified administration over the island they called Ceylon, and the Union Jack flew until independence in 1948.

Sri Lanka is beguiling and mysterious: we left wanting to know more, we hope you’ll feel the same.
